Intelligent payment routing: how to maximize authorization rates

Every failed payment authorization represents lost revenue. Across the industry, merchants lose an estimated 5–15% of potential transactions to authorization failures — and most of those failures are preventable with the right routing strategy.

Intelligent payment routing uses real-time signals — card BIN data, merchant category, transaction amount, geography, and historical authorization rates — to select the optimal processor for each transaction at the moment of checkout.

The simplest form of intelligent routing is waterfall failover: if the primary PSP declines a transaction, automatically retry with a secondary PSP. This alone can recover 2–4% of transactions that would otherwise fail.

More sophisticated routing uses machine learning models trained on millions of transactions to predict the probability of authorization success with each processor, given the characteristics of the current transaction. Merchants using this approach consistently see authorization rates above 98%.

For businesses processing significant volume internationally, geographic routing is equally important. Card issuers have higher trust in transactions that are processed by local acquirers. Routing European cards through a European processor and US cards through a US processor can meaningfully improve authorization rates in each market.
